What is DVT and PE?
Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is an internal clot formed in one of the body's deep veins, usually one of those in the leg.  If a part of the clot breaks free and moves into the lung, it can lead to pulmonary embolism (PE), an often-fatal condition.

There are many factors that may affect blood clotting, including:

  • Ageing, over 40

  • Previous thrombotic history

  • Certain haematology disorders

  • Sitting in cramped positions for long durations

  • Malignant disease

  • Congestive heart failure

  • Recent surgery, especially of the lower limbs

  • Pregnancy or recent childbirth

  • Chronic venous insufficiency

  • Hormone treatment

  • Some contraceptives

  • Dehydration

  • Smoking, obesity and varicose veins

  • Thalidomide used for treating leprosy and chemotherapy treatment

DVT can occur after prolonged periods of travel on planes, trains and cars.  It can also occur as a result of prolonged Internet surfing, a condition increasingly referred to as e-thrombosis.

Recent research has suggested that people shorter than 1.6m (5ft 3in) and taller than 1.9m (6ft 3in) are five and four times, respectiveyl, more likely to suffer from DVT during and after a flight.  This is not because people of these heights are at greater risk in general, but is likely to be because they may be less compatible with standard airline seating arrangements.

Anticoagulation Europe (ACE) is a UK based charity that provides information and advice to people on oral anticoagulation therapy and will work closely with the consortium as both advisors and observers.
