| The aim of the DVT-IMP project is to improve the speed, reliability and accuracy of early assessment of patients displaying symptoms of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE) at the point of first contact.
The device will provide fast, quantitative and reliable measurement of D-dimer concentration, assisting practitioners in performing an effective assessment of patients showing symptoms of deep vein thrombosis or pulmonary embolism, at the earliest point of contact.
During 2001 the number of reported incident cases of DVT and PE totalled 1.2 million in France, Spain, Germany, Italy, United Kingdom, Japan and United States alone. This figure is expected to rise to 1.4 million per annum by 2011, due to increase in population. Within these countries it is estimated that healthcare systems invest up to €6.6 billion annually in assessment of patients suspected to be suffering from thromboembolitic event, whose diagnosis proves to be negative.
